Preserve. Protect. Beautify.
Over the last 400 years, since the humble beginnings of Rittenhouse Square, this extraordinary six acres of beauty and charm has seen plenty of change. Amazingly enough, given the blistering speed of cycles that typically occur in most urban settings, Rittenhouse Square did not lose its character and one-of-a-kind flavor.
In 1976, it became clear that an organization was needed to look after the Square, ensuring that it retained its rare originality. The Friends of Rittenhouse Square was organized to “preserve, protect, and beautify” the Square. And that’s been our mission statement ever since. It’s simple but significant. The Square is owned by the city, and we work in a public-private partnership with Fairmount Park.
For the last 34 years, Friends have been joining together to do the hard work of preservation and protection that keeps this very special place looking beautiful. If you are already a Friend, thank you for your generosity through membership, gifting, volunteering or sponsorship. If you would like to become one, well, we love making new Friends!
