Held bi-annually in the spring and fall, Love Your Park Week is collectively organized by the Fairmount Park Conservancy, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. Love Your Park Week is eight days of festivities, events, workshops, and activities happening all over the city. The Friends of Rittenhouse Square participate in this week of events with a park clean-up day on Saturday.

Volunteers meet at 9:00 am in Rittenhouse Square to plant flowers, weed, rake leaves, and collect trash.

Annual membership meetings

The Friends of Rittenhouse Square holds two annual meetings for the membership in May and November. Updates are provided on finances, on-going programs, events, and current projects.

*Attendees must hold a current membership to participate.

Meetings are hosted by The Rittenhouse at 210 West Rittenhouse Square.

holiday lighting

Held annually in late November or early December, the Rittenhouse Square Holiday Park Lighting is organized by The Friends of Rittenhouse Square. The Holiday Park Lighting is a Philadelphia favorite and kicks-off the Rittenhouse holiday shopping season with family-friendly activities and music leading up to the lighting of the 30-foot holiday tree and white globe lights. The holiday park lights continue to be illuminated every night through the end of December.

Held annually during Chanukah, the Menorah Lighting is organized by Lubavitch of Center City. The festivities typically begin with a community event at The Ethical Humanist Society of Philadelphia then a gathering in the center of Rittenhouse Square to light the giant menorah.

rittenhouse square farmers' markets

Held Saturdays (year round). The Saturday market is open 9am-3pm from May to the Saturday before Thanksgiving. From Thanksgiving weekend to end of April, the hours are 10am-2pm. Also, the Tuesday market is open now, 10am-2pm, every Tuesday until the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. The Rittenhouse Square Farmers’ Market is organized by Farm to City and features goods from farmers throughout the region. The market vendors setup on Walnut Street between 18th and 19th Streets. Farm to City is a Philadelphia- based program whose goal is to unite communities, families, and farmers year-round through good locally grown food. They host several farmers’ markets through-out the city.

18th st. outdoor cafÉs

Held annually in conjunction with the Fine Art Shows and October Fine Craft Fair, the 18th Street Outdoor Cafes are organized by the Friends of Rittenhouse Square in partnership with Rouge, Devon Seafood Grill and Parc.

 

The Friends of Rittenhouse Square partner with Rouge, Devon Seafood Grill and Parc to close 18th Street between Walnut and Locust Streets and offer expanded outdoor dining from 12:00pm – 10:00pm. A portion of the proceeds from the restaurants’ sales during the event are donated to Rittenhouse Square.

fine craft fair

Held bi-annually in May and October, The Rittenhouse Square Fine Craft Fair is organized in partnership with the PA Guild of Craftsmen and the Friends of Rittenhouse Square. Introduced in 2012, the Rittenhouse Square Fine Craft Fair is the fine craft equivalent of the much-loved Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show, featuring 140 of the Guild’s very finest craft artists. Founded in 1944 at the recommendation of Eleanor Roosevelt, the Pennsylvania Guild is one of the nation’s largest and most recognized craft guilds, specializing in the advocacy and support of more than 1,400 members whose handwork is known for its unparalleled skill and artistry. Fine craft is often defined as the hand and mind transformation of raw materials into inspired works of art. The finished products may be either traditional or contemporary in style and design.

As an additional fundraiser, the Friends of Rittenhouse Square host an Outdoor Café on 18th Street on Saturday during the show in partnership with Rouge, Devon Seafood Grill & Parc.

2020 virtual art show

The Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show (RSFAS), uniquely distinguished as the oldest outdoor art show in the nation, will be transformed into a virtual event June 5-7, 2020. 

The Rittenhouse Square Fine Arts Association (RSFAA) announced its plans to continue the 93 year-old streak of annually sharing original fine art by showcasing the artwork of professional artists online, allowing art patrons the experience of virtually visiting the show while social-distancing.

 

Held bi-annually in June and September, The Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show is organized by the Rittenhouse Square Fine Arts Association. Originally started in June 1932 when a small group of Philadelphia art students came to Rittenhouse Square to hang their work between the trees on clotheslines, the Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show has become the oldest continuously run outdoor art show of original artwork in the entire country. Highlighting professional and student artists, the Fine Arts Show “Circles the Square” with over 140 individual tents and booths.

As an additional fundraiser, the Friends of Rittenhouse Square host an Outdoor Café on 18th Street on Saturday during the show in partnership with Rouge, Devon Seafood Grill & Parc.

FLOWER MARKET

Celebrate spring with PHS at the over century old Rittenhouse Flower Market in Rittenhouse Square. Enjoy two days of great garden shopping.

Head to the middle of the square to find all your spring garden shopping needs: colorful annuals perfect for window boxes and containers; spring veggies and herbs for your culinary garden; succulents and cacti for small space gardeners; and so much more.

All plants are provided by PHS Meadowbrook Farm. Experts will be on hand to answer your gardening questions both days.

In addition to great plants, enjoy these extra festivities of the day: cut flower bouquets from Urban Stems; cool containers from City Planter; a coloring contest for kids; a gardening story time with the Free Library; floral hair braiding; face painting; yard games; and live music to entertain you while you shop and enjoy.
